Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang

Waterfall, Luang Prabang

Situated on the Mekong river, Luang Prabang is an unspoilt treasure in the Laos jungles. Travelling from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang is like taking a step back in time. The highlights of a trip to Luang Prabang are the Buddha Cave, and the beautiful waterfalls, as well of course as the hilltop temple in the middle of the 'city'.

Further information for planning your trip to Laos can be found here.

Flights from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang

The flight from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang takes just an hour, with the descent through the green mountains to Luang Prabang airport and experience to be remembered. Flights are available through Lao Airlines.

From Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang by boat.

For the more adventurous, it is also possible to take the boat to Luang Prabang, also known as the 'slow boat', as it is a 3 day, 2 night trip which explores the Mekong river from Huay Xai (a bus ride from Chiang Mai) to Luang Prabang. It is also possible to take a speed boat on the same route - but we don't recommend it!
