A flight from Chiang Mai to Phuket takes around 2 hours. Currently only Thai Airways offers the route, but it is one way, meaning the return route stops in Bangkok. There is only one flight per day, otherwise a change in Bangkok is necessary. The train doesn't go travel to Phuket, so any other option is long and complicated.
