Getting Around
For the locals, Chiang Mai is easy to navigate around, with the moat and then 3 major roads circling around it - roads then connect these conveniently. But for the visitor, it can be a maze of old streets and signs written in Thai script. Fortunately there are plenty of local transport options to help you out, indeed many tuktuk drivers are too keen to help you out!
Songthaew
Songthaew, literally two benches, are really converted pickups, with an enclosed back and two parallel seats, or benches, in the back for customers to sit on. This is a very inexpensive travel option, but most songthaew's have a set route. For a little extra you can arrange for them to take you to a specific place or even on a tour.

Tuktuk

Tuktuk's are a popular form of local transport, the Thai taxi. They are effectively 3 wheeled bikes with space for a couple to sit relatively safely and enclosed in the back. Tuktuks are very agile and weave through the traffic taking you where you ask them. Prices are negotiable - we recommend you negotiate before your journey - and tuktuks can be found on most street corners. That is of course, if they don't find you!
Taxi
The official taxi service is new to Chiang Mai, but many westerners will feel more comfortable in the back of a car. Call a taxi to pick you up from anywhere on 053-279291
